INDIGENOUS AND ANIMIST TRADITIONS

Australian Aboriginal Traditions

The traditions of over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language groups, centred on the Dreaming (Stanner's "everywhen"), Country as living relation, and Law transmitted through kinship and initiation. Knowledge is held by right and much is closed. This page links only to AIATSIS, the Indigenous-governed national institute, and offers no practice.

RESPECTFUL ENGAGEMENT

These traditions are closed: knowledge is held by right, through relationship and initiation. Non-Indigenous practitioners do not facilitate, adapt or borrow them for exercises. Refer to community-controlled Aboriginal organisations and Elders at their own invitation.

I · Overview & core concepts

Australia’s Aboriginal peoples hold many distinct traditions and Laws, not one system; what follows is orientation only. The Dreaming (not “dreamtime”) is the ongoing creative reality of the ancestral beings — present, not past. Country is a living relation to whom people owe obligation, not scenery. Law is the enduring structure of that obligation. Songlines are tracks of the ancestral beings held in song and ceremony. Kinship is the structure of reality itself: everything that exists stands in relation. Knowledge is held by right and earned through relationship and initiation over a lifetime; it is not granted by access, curiosity or payment (Stanner, 2009; Rose, 1996; Yunkaporta, 2019).

Why the Seven Territories are not applied here. The Territories are a linear practitioner’s map — crisis, opening, deepening, union, dissolution, return. This is a system in which the Dreaming is present rather than developmental, and in which knowledge is earned through relationship and initiation over a lifetime. A territory-by-territory table would be a category error, and none is offered. The single resonance worth noting is with Territory 7 (Integration/Return): the fulfilment of a life as belonging to Country and kin.

III · Practitioner notes

Recognise. A client may be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or may have absorbed Aboriginal concepts through popular culture. Recognise the difference and treat both with care.

Caution. Non-Indigenous coaches do not use Aboriginal concepts as exercises, metaphors or frameworks. Note that Bruce Chatwin’s The Songlines is a literary work, not a source on these traditions.

Refer. Matters of Country, ceremony and belonging belong to community-controlled organisations and Elders at their own invitation — not to a coach.
